Blair Tech Tip: Android Users — Make Sure Your Contacts Are Saved to Google!

Getting a new phone should be exciting, not stressful. But one of the most common problems people encounter when switching phones is discovering that some or all of their contacts are missing.

Here’s something many Android users don’t realize:

Just because a contact is saved on your phone doesn’t necessarily mean it’s backed up to your Google account.

Depending on your phone and how it was set up, contacts might be stored directly on the device, on a SIM card, in a carrier’s contact service, or in your Google account.

If your contacts are stored only on your phone or through your carrier, transferring them to a new device can become more complicated.

Why Use Google Contacts?

When your contacts are saved to your Google account and syncing is enabled, they can follow you when you sign in to another compatible device.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Easier phone upgrades: Sign in to your Google account and your synced contacts can appear on your new phone.
  • Protection if your phone is lost or damaged: Your synced contacts aren’t dependent on the old phone still working.
  • Access from a computer: View and manage your contacts at contacts.google.com.
  • Automatic syncing: Changes to Google contacts can sync across your connected devices.
  • Less dependence on your carrier: Switching phone companies doesn’t have to mean worrying about transferring your contacts.

How to Check Your Contacts

Step 1: On your phone or computer, visit contacts.google.com and sign in with the Google account you use on your Android phone.

Step 2: Look through the contact list. Are all your important contacts there?

Step 3: If contacts are missing, they may be saved somewhere else, such as the phone itself, a SIM card, or another account.

Step 4: Open your phone’s Contacts app and check its settings for contact syncing, account management, and options to move or import contacts into your Google account.

The exact steps vary depending on your phone manufacturer and Android version.

Important: Installing Google Contacts alone doesn’t automatically mean every existing contact has been moved to your Google account. Verify where your contacts are actually saved.
